A directory for the American airwaves

Looking up an American broadcaster's exact frequency, coverage area or format used to mean digging through FCC technical filings. RadioStationDex repackages those filings as a browsable directory where every station has its own page — useful to a listener checking what's on air in their city and to an industry professional verifying licence data.

It sits in my own product portfolio: the business, the code and the SEO strategy are all mine.

What the directory does

  • Instant lookup by call sign, city or frequency from any page on the site.
  • Station pages combining technical details, coverage area and format information.
  • State browsing with station counts per territory — 5,646 in California, 3,098 in Florida, and so on.
  • Service split across FM, AM and TV, each tallied separately.
  • Stats section aggregating the whole index.
  • Blog with supporting editorial about broadcasting.

Dataset and reach

The homepage counters break the inventory down: 73,186 total stations28,560 FM, 10,015 AM and 34,611 TV — on FCC broadcast data refreshed weekly. Beyond the US states, the territory list also carries Canadian and Mexican stations found in the records.

The engineering underneath

A 73,000-page directory isn't laid out by hand — it's generated. RadioStationDex is a custom Laravel + PHP application over MySQL, tuned so tens of thousands of station, state and city pages resolve fast, with zero plugins involved.

Organic growth is driven by programmatic SEO: titles, meta descriptions, structured data and internal links are produced automatically for every station and territory page.

What the project shows

  • Normalization: FCC technical filings reshaped into station pages any listener can read.
  • Automation: 73,000 station pages generated and refreshed weekly without manual editing.
  • Repeatable architecture: the same directory pattern transfers to any sector with structured data.
