From raw FCC filings to a browsable tower map

Anyone can download the FCC's Antenna Structure Registration files — and almost nobody wants to. TowerDex is an own product I designed, built and run that takes that raw registry and publishes it as clean, linked pages: one per state, city, county, owner, structure type, height range and individual registration.

It exists to answer questions like "How many towers are in Texas?", "Who owns the tallest structure in Houston?" and "What tower types dominate my county?" without forcing a raw file download. Researchers, planners, tower crews and local infrastructure watchers are the natural audience.

  • Start broad, then drill down. Open a state page, compare its top cities and counties, then land on tower-level records with full detail.
  • Owner portfolios. Browse every structure a company has registered — the fastest way to map who controls infrastructure in a market.
  • Types, heights and rankings. Seven structure types, height-range browsing and a Top 100 tallest towers list topped by a 627.8 m (2,059.7 ft) giant in Galesburg, North Dakota.
  • Rich tower records. Each registration shows owner, height, FAA information and nearby structures, cross-linked to its geography.
  • Answer-engine friendly pages. Major pages carry summaries, FAQs, comparisons and source-based metrics that are easy to quote — built for search and GEO-style answers alike.
  • National stats. Top-state and top-type rankings put every local figure in context.

How it is engineered

No templates, no plugins — TowerDex is custom-built on a Laravel + PHP backend with a MySQL database tuned to serve hundreds of thousands of geography, owner and tower pages fast. Every URL is generated from the data itself: programmatic SEO applied to a federal registry.

The invisible work is the hard part: normalising the raw ASR export, deduplicating owners, precomputing state and type rankings, and regenerating XML sitemaps so crawlers can discover every corner of the directory after each quarterly refresh.

Where does the tower data come from?

From the FCC's public Antenna Structure Registration (ASR) system. TowerDex is built around recurring ASR refreshes with quarterly data updates, so every landing page stays aligned with real antenna structure records instead of a stale export.

How many antenna structures does TowerDex cover?

The platform tracks 186,603 active registered towers across all 50 US states, organised into 7 structure types, with an average of roughly 3,732 towers per state.

Can I see who owns a specific tower?

Yes. Every tower record lists its owner, and owner pages group entire portfolios — useful for site acquisition, broadcast market discovery and telecom competitor review. The tallest profile, a 627.8 m tower in Galesburg, North Dakota, belongs to Parker Broadcasting of Dakota, LLC.

What does an individual tower page include?

Owner, height, FAA information and nearby structures, plus internal links to the tower's city, county and state pages so you can keep drilling through the geography.
