Why ChildcareScan exists

Choosing childcare is one of the most delicate decisions a family makes, and Australia has something most countries don't: a public quality rating system. ACECQA, the national regulator, assesses every education and care service against the National Quality Standard across 7 quality areas, on a scale that runs from Significant Improvement Required up to Excellent.

The problem is that hardly anyone knows how to look it up. The official data exists, but it was built for the regulator, not for a parent searching "childcare near me" on a Tuesday night. ChildcareScan turns that official register into a usable comparison site: every centre has a profile with its current NQS rating, service type and location, and a search as natural as a suburb name returns options that are ranked and easy to compare.

It belongs to my own network of websites: there is no client involved. I picked the niche, I designed it, I coded it and I operate it — including the part nobody sees, which is keeping the data fresh and the server fast.

What it lets families do

• Search by centre name, suburb or postcode, built for the way a parent actually searches, not the way a data analyst does.
• Read each centre's NQS rating across the 7 quality areas of the Australian national standard, shown on its individual profile.
• Browse all 8 states and territories, led by New South Wales (6,230 centres), Victoria (5,096) and Queensland (3,374).
• Shortlist standout centres rated Exceeding NQS or Excellent — only 25 centres in the whole country hold the top grade.
• See the national ratings picture: 73.8% of centres meet the standard and 18.3% exceed it, charted in the stats section.
• Learn before deciding with a guide and blog that explain the quality system, all of it free and with no sign-up.

How it is built

1. Laravel architecture

• Laravel + PHP on MySQL, with the schema tuned to serve thousands of centre profiles and state pages with instant load times.
• Server-rendered frontend with Blade: Tailwind CSS for the interface and Alpine.js only where interactivity is needed (menu, search box, FAQ accordions). No SPA for content that lives off SEO.
• Assets compiled with Vite, with preloading and fingerprinting so CSS and JS never penalise the first load.

2. Data pipeline

• A single official source: ACECQA's public register, which yields the 18,450 centres and 7,277 approved providers.
• Periodic synchronisation against the source, so the rating a family sees is the same one recorded in the official register.
• Normalisation and clean-up: every service keeps its official identifier in its profile URL, which keeps slugs stable even if a centre changes its name.

3. Programmatic SEO

• One clean URL per centre, per state and per service type, generated from the data — thousands of indexable pages without writing any of them by hand.
• Metadata and JSON-LD from the data: title, description, canonical, Open Graph and schemas (WebSite with SearchAction, Organization, FAQPage) are assembled automatically in every template.
• Supporting content: an NQS guide, national statistics and a blog that give editorial context to the programmatic pages.

4. Performance

• Lightweight server-rendered pages: no heavy client-side frameworks, the HTML arrives ready to paint.
• Optimised queries so state listings with thousands of centres, and the search itself, respond instantly.
• Hands-on operation: I monitor the site, its crawling and its indexing as part of the product's routine maintenance.

Coverage and where the data comes from

The platform covers the entire system: 18,450 centres operated by 7,277 approved providers across all 8 states and territories, from 6,230 in New South Wales down to 238 in the Northern Territory. The data comes from ACECQA and is refreshed regularly.

The detail matters too: 12,812 centres (73.8%) meet the national standard, 3,177 (18.3%) exceed it, 1,334 (7.7%) remain at Working Towards NQS, only 25 in the whole country are rated Excellent and barely 10 carry the lowest grade — nuance that helps a family read any single rating in context.

The outcome

ChildcareScan is a living product, free for families and in continuous operation. For anyone weighing up hiring me, it is tangible proof of something a portfolio of mock-ups cannot show: I can run a sensitive vertical end to end — choosing the official source, building the data pipeline, generating thousands of programmatic pages that rank, and keeping it all running without a team behind me.

And it is no one-off experiment: it belongs to a family of comparison sites cut from the same cloth — daycare in the US, schools and aged care homes in Australia — built on the same philosophy: official data, plain language and an experience designed for the person deciding, not the person coding.
