Every US school, one clean directory

Picking a school is a high-stakes decision, and in the US the raw facts are public — if you know your way around NCES statistical tables. Most families don't. K12Scan, one of my own products, closes that gap: it ingests the official dataset and republishes it as tidy, comparable profiles for more than 98,000 K-12 schools.

No ratings invented, no opinions layered on top. Just the government's own numbers, made findable and readable.

The single source of truth is the National Center for Education Statistics. K12Scan's job is editorial restraint: organize publicly available directory data into a resource people can browse, and stay out of the way.

Built to serve tens of thousands of pages fast

At this scale a template-based CMS falls over, so K12Scan is a custom Laravel + PHP application on top of a MySQL schema designed for bulk publishing: an import pipeline normalizes the NCES files and regenerates every school, district and state page in one pass.

Ranking is handled with programmatic SEO — each profile assembles its own title, meta description, breadcrumbs and structured data from the underlying record. No theme, no plugin overhead, which is also why the pages load fast.

K12Scan questions, answered

Is the school information on K12Scan official?

Yes — everything comes from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the US government body that publishes education data. K12Scan simply organizes that public dataset into clean, searchable school profiles.

How many schools does the directory include?

98,000+ K-12 schools nationwide, which the site presents as the most comprehensive directory of US primary and secondary schools.

Can I find schools near a specific ZIP code?

That is exactly what the School Finder is for: enter any ZIP code and it surfaces nearby schools. You can also search by name, city or state, and drill down by district, grade span or school type.

What appears on a school profile page?

Enrollment figures, student demographics, test scores and finances — the NCES data points families actually compare, laid out per school instead of buried in statistical tables.
